About us

Founded in 1994, the Uruguayan Plant Breeders Association (URUPOV) is a non-profit organization that gathers over 90% of the plant breeding, seed production, distribution and trade companies throughout the country.

As a leading and effective voice of the seed industry, URUPOV advocates science and regulatory issues of industry-wide importance, promoting research on new plant varieties and contributing to the development of the sector through innovative, competitive and sustainable agriculture.

Mission

To represent and defend the interests of plant breeders, seed producers and traders, contributing to the development of new plant varieties and thus to a more productive and sustainable sector.

Vision

To be a benchmark organization at national and international level in the effective and efficient representation and defense of plant breeders’ rights. To base its management on continuous improvement and the capacity for innovation, maintaining a strong commitment to the development of the agricultural sector.

Our Goals:

To represent and give professional advice to its members; breeders, traders and producers of seeds of protected plant varieties before public and private organizations, both nationally and internationally.

To promote cooperation agreements with the official bodies related to intellectual property rights for the correct and effective application of the laws that defend it.

To promote the use of new varieties and protect their legal use, ensuring farmers new and better plant varieties and seeds of superior genetics.

To promote the creation of an adequate and fair legal framework for seed production and trade.

To remove the illegal seed bag (so called brown bagging) from the market.

To design and implement royalty collection systems for the use of protected varieties (PBR) to guarantee genetic progress.

To provide collaboration to the National Seed Institute of Uruguay (INASE), which exercises enforcement and oversight of the seed production and trade.

To formulate guidelines and promote professional ethics and excellence in the technical performance of the activities of its associates.

To disseminate, educate and promote the benefits of developing and complying with intellectual property regulations.
